During the dark times of COVID-19, we lost many lives, but although difficult, we must say, that’s life! With hindsight, we can look back and find some favors Corona had for us.

Improving remote work culture and paying attention to human dimensions

So why don’t we do our work at home? CORONA helped us stay with our family more and do our jobs remotely. Game studios have similarly taken advantage of remote working, and the entertainment industry has continued to entertain us during a period when offices were closed. That excruciating disease could not stop human creativity and problem-solving power. In those days, the more people got used to death, the more they understood that forced overtime was pointless. A clear message was being whispered in our ears: Life can end anytime, and nothing is important enough to trap ourselves and others in long working hours. Therefore, for the first time, sparks of attention to the problem of forced overtime in the game industry turned into fire.

Remote work made us spend more time with our family

The epidemic of digital events in the Corona era

We had another transformation in the gaming industry: in-person events. Do you remember the year 2020? The ship of the 9th generation of video games was gradually moving away from the dock, and we watched all the moments of its launch in private events. Simply put, Sony and Microsoft introduced their new consoles at online events for the first time in history: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

This became the basis for the spread of digital events. After that, all the small and big publishers took a step toward salvation and sent their products and works to the screens of our homes without stopping behind the vast Internet networks. While we were more shocked every day thinking about the terrible events caused by Corona, every week, hour, and minute, a new event was held and announced the arrival of better days.

You also know very well that PC and console gamers sometimes have an unfavorable opinion about mobile gamers. The epidemic of corona disease showed the potential of mobile games, and this platform saved the game industry from death. The income from these games unexpectedly hit records, and it is unbelievable that this unpopular element in the hearts of professional gamers was what we should appreciate today. Mobile games proudly brought out our beloved industry and its workers in an era in which the Hollywood and music industries were headed for eternal ruin.

Online events kept us entertained during pandemic.

The role of technology and video game companies to the public

Now it’s time to ask yourself, in what other period of modern history have we understood the role of IT companies so well? Usually, when it comes to Google, Microsoft, Apple, Meta, and hundreds of other big and small tech giants, we are angry with them. Angry because they collect our data, have full access to our personal information, and often do the exact opposite of what is expected of them.

This also applies to many companies in the game industry. For example, people generally hate Electronic Arts. Ubisoft is constantly criticized for using repetitive concepts. On the other hand, gamers are always grumbling about why the gap between the release of Rockstar games is so long. You can add hundreds of other complaints about game companies and technology activists to our article.

Usually, when it comes to Google, Microsoft, Apple, Meta, and hundreds of other big and small tech giants, we are angry with them.

But in the era of Corona, the importance of entertainment became clear. We have learned that smartphones, laptops, electronic product companies, and even social networks, as evil as they may seem, help us stay grounded in humanity’s darkest days. The games of the most hated companies were the only hope of life for many of us.

So, to make a long story short, entertainment has been identified as the most significant factor that has kept us from going insane during the COVID-19 pandemic. The work culture has changed drastically, and the importance of technology is emphasized better than ever in our lives. These are just some of the hidden benefits that the Corona restrictions have led us to flourish. However, was it worth it? I don’t know, but answer honestly: Did we have any other choice?
