It is the most critical moment of your game. You are surrounded by enemies and not much is left to finish this level. And here we go, something comes up, you must stop the game and get on the bus now. But what if you could save the game, get on the bus, and continue it through your smartphone? It is not a dream anymore! Welcome to the reign of cloud gaming. Doesn’t sound familiar? We explain it to you.

What is Cloud Gaming?

Cloud gaming and so-called game streaming is the advanced cloud technology for playing video games online on a remote server in a data center. Like Netflix and Sound Cloud, which stream movies and music for us, Cloud Gaming platforms stream games. There is no need to buy or download the game, you have entered a digital gaming club. The games are bought, and you are there only to play. All you need is a stable internet connection and then you can play on your smartphone, laptop, tablet, and even TV.

If you are wondering how it works, you should look at clouds as a mass of data. Your cloud gaming platform transfers this data from its servers to your system via the internet. So, in this case, you wouldn’t need a gaming console or a high-tech computer. The idea is that everyone, with any device, at any time, enjoys gaming.

Where did it come from?

It was in the early 2000s that Game Cluster, a startup built by a group of young gigs, introduced its latest product at E3. Through their cloud gaming platform, gamers could play AAA games, even with a shabby computer. The gratifying encounter of the users tickled technology giants to dive into the cloud gaming world and try their luck for success in this field. Some made it, and some did not.

Microsoft xCloud and Google Stadia were released in 2019, Amazon Luna started in 2020 and of course, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation came ahead. But not all the giants could make it, since there is more to it than meets the eye. Google Stadia was shut down in 2021 because it couldn’t come up with the users’ expectations, leaving the battlefield for its rivals.

How to play?

Playing through clouds is easy and straightforward. You only have to download the platform or play through the web. Most companies deliver monthly subscriptions for users. Sometimes you have the chance to play a limited time online in order to check your internet and maybe gaming skills! Then you are off to go. The monthly and sometimes yearly subscription is not that much and you can use tokens or bitcoins as well.

Based on the service you choose; the platform will give you a variety of options. You can save your game, do some video or sound editing, play multiplayer games with your friends from different devices, and of course have access to AAA games, from GTA to Resident Evil!

As you enter the platform, you can either play with your own controller (some companies deliver their own controllers, and the controller is compatible via Bluetooth and cable) or use the touchscreen.

How to reduce latency in cloud gaming?

If you want to make sure whether your internet connection is suitable, there is always a speed check, that shows the capacity of your connection. Latency is one of the most important issues if your internet connection is unstable. In this case, getting data from your device and server will have a delay. In shootings or sports games, shooting the enemy or scoring a goal should happen in less than a blink of an eye. So, always make sure to measure latency and test your ping.

It is almost impossible to have zero latency, but it is recommended to have anything between 40–60 ms. Latency needs to be 200ms or below. The jitter percentage should be below 15% as well.

Why cloud gaming?

Let’s put it this way: why not? With cloud computing embracing the whole world, each company or person who resists catching up is doomed to failure. The era of expensive and heavy hardware is gone. The success of Hulu, Spotify, and other platforms in different industries is a lesson for any company that wants to be among the pioneers of the state-of-the-art technology that will conquer the gaming world.
